A shopping centre in Shanghai is projecting a connection with the old Shanghai through its facade design. The traditional pattern of design screen, materials used and geometry concept is conceived by the Dutch firm UNStudio. The burst of patterns shades spaces for shopping, strolling, eating and hanging out with family and friends in the mall. The position of the components on the surface, based on a hexagonal grid, changes with the perspective, providing a dynamic look to the facade. Double height openings on the facade provide natural lighting to flush the interiors while also allowing for the people outside getting a peek inside. The diamond shaped panels are tied together using pins, forming a tensioned cladding system. The arrangement of components changes across the surface of the facade from single layer to triple layer, up to a depth of 400mm. These panels are made of different materials but lit by RGB LEDs, helping to create different visual effects during the day and night times.
