In recent news that comes as a pleasant surprise the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) of Singapore has said that it is going to make sure that the buildings are safe and easy to maintain and chart out a new framework for the same. It has also assured that it is working to make the facade maintenance regime stricter so as “to ensure that facades and exterior features are well-maintained, regularly inspected and remain properly secured.” In a media interview, BCA’s outgoing chief executive officer Dr John Keung informed that the authority has started working on their design-for-maintainability framework about two years back and they should be able to put it out by the end of the year 2017. He also said that “maintanability” is going to be the next big thing in the construction and design sectors and hence, the issue, which also involves a lot of manpower, is vital to be looked into. Some of the aspects that the framework will consider are how buildings can become easier to clean as well as the type of materials that require less maintenance. This also comes after the construction of high-rise structures becoming a defining point for cities across the world, including Singapore. He said that the BCA Academy is developing courses on facade inspection which would be launched later this year.
