Cladding is the application of one material over another to provide a skin or layer which can control the infiltration of weather elements, or for aesthetic purposes.
It is technically defined as the visible external finish of a building, such as the roof or external walls.

What is cladding in construction
In building construction, cladding is used to provide a shield against the weather. The materials used may be a combination of metals, aluminum, or plastic. This material is most commonly applied and installed around windows, doors, roofs, and chimneys where rain water is more likely to penetrate into the interiors. It is done in one of the following ways.
- Cladding that is made of impermeable materials is used so that rain water can only access the building through joints. Properly designed joints with sealant can completely keep out the rain infiltration.
- Cladding that is made up of porous material (bricks) absorbs rain during rainfall and subsequently dries out. Water will not be able to enter the building if the cladding is of sufficient thickness with low permeability.

Architectural cladding is material applied to the exterior of a building for both protection and aesthetic purposes. Cladding can come in a wide variety of materials, including wood, stone, concrete, and synthetic materials. They are also available in the form of pre-fabricated panels. All types of cladding share a common purpose, which is to protect the building against rainwater, which can cause an incredible amount of damage to unprotected buildings. Architectural cladding can also improve the appearance of a building to which it’s applied giving it a very designer look.
