As the name suggests, an L shaped modular kitchen has a layout in which the countertops are placed against adjoining walls perpendicular to each other so that they form the letter L. It is a fairly standard design found in most homes and is quite efficient. Designed more for small or medium sized houses or apartments, the L shaped kitchen is a great alternative when your kitchen doesn’t have the space for an island. It also works great for areas that are open plan.
In order for an L shaped modular kitchen to be incorporated, the kitchen area itself must be built in a corner where two walls form a 90 degree angle to each other. This allows for the countertops to be placed perpendicular to each other so that you get the full advantage of the working triangle. This layout allows easy movement between the sink, the refrigerator and the oven or gas stove and makes meal preps quite efficient.
Since the L shaped kitchen is placed in a corner, it leaves two walls free so that you can have multiple entrances and exits. Traffic through the kitchen becomes much easier in such cases. Since the countertops utilize only two walls, you have access to more open space and can even open the kitchen up to another room such as the living room or the dining room.
Any cabinets you plan to install can also be adjusted as per the length, especially the L shaped kitchen cabinets that need to be installed in the corner of the layout. The cabinets can be traditional or modern in design; neither detracts from the aesthetic of the kitchen.
If the kitchen area is small you can use colours and shelves to make it seem larger and give the impression of more space. Install open shelving so that the kitchen doesn’t look busy or overwhelmed with too many things. Also use lighter colours since they make the kitchen space seem larger. If the L shaped kitchen is a large one, you can go with darker colours that make the kitchen seem warmer.
You can select the cabinetry based on the style you’re going for – rustic, contemporary, elegant or some combination of any two or all three. If the kitchen space is larger, you can even have a kitchen island installed. In a smaller area, you can still make the kitchen the heart of the home by utilising the space that the L shaped kitchen design leaves you to play around with.
