Simply put, a U shaped kitchen design has three of the four walls of a kitchen lined with countertops, appliances and cabinets. It is a fairly efficient design that leaves quite a bit of floor space free. This design makes maximum use of the wall space thanks to the installation of appliances and cabinets. The size of the kitchen is also not a major concern, although a U shaped kitchen is best installed in a larger kitchen.
The design of the U shaped kitchen is such that it isn’t always possible to have an island in the middle of the kitchen or even put in a table and chairs. It depends upon the size of the kitchen. However, there are ways around this. You can change one of the walls into a peninsula which can be used for homework, paying bills or simply for eating. Doing this will eliminate some storage space so you need to consider this carefully.
You can also create more space by moving the refrigerator out of the kitchen. Whatever your design plans remember that it is best to always have a space of at least 3.5 feet between the counters or between the island and the counters. This is so that people can move freely and safely and there is plenty of space to open doors.
If your kitchen is lacking in space, paint it in lighter even minimalistic colours so that the room doesn’t appear cramped. You can also use dark colours in combination with a table and chairs to create a warm effect although you may need to remove some cupboards or cabinets to accommodate the dining set.
You can also turn the galley or parallel kitchen into a U shaped kitchen. The third wall which is short can accommodate either a countertop or an appliance such as a range cooker or sink. You can also have the wall units installed here, giving you more storage space and maintaining the continuity of the design.
Thanks to the number of cabinets and countertops required a U shaped kitchen, its price can range anywhere between Rs. 40,000 and Rs. 8,00,000 per set. The price can also be calculated based on the square footage that the designers have to work with and can lie between Rs. 1,800 and Rs. 2,600 per square foot. This differs from company to company as do the prices so shop around to find out more.
